People often say recruitment is not ‘rocket science’. That’s true, it’s more like an high impact sport – challenging, demanding, rewarding and passionate. There is also an awful lot more to it than first meets the eye!
If you are going to have a career as a recruitment consultant you need to be hard working, driven, determined, influential and persuasive. That list is not exhaustive!
The rewards lie in the varied and fast-paced nature of the job
On a day to day basis you may be:
- presenting to a major client in the morning
- spending hours preparing an important proposal in the afternoon
- spending hours phone in hand talking to new prospects
- interviewing new candidates before you send them to meet clients
- writing job advertisements and placing them in newspapers/online
- presenting at a trade exhibition to meet new clients
You will need determination. You may spend your first few days in the office researching and finding out contact names to find new business with, then face objections when making calls to them to get them to agree to a meeting. Your desire to make breakthroughs each day will keep you going, your buzz, and the team’s buzz, when you close successfully, as well as the supportive and fun atmosphere within your team.
You will meet clients both large and small and tailor your approach to their needs. You will have the joy and nerves of pitching to large clients, and the pressure and buzz of having to fill positions quickly. You will need to be prepared and organised as you are a lynchpin in the whole recruitment process, and play an important role in finding people new jobs. You will meet candidates from a variety of backgrounds and learn so much about other people and their experiences and cultures.
Recruitment is rewarding, fast paced and interesting. There is no getting round the fact that it is hard work and can mean some long hours during busy periods. But the pleasure of finding people a great next step in their careers and solving businesses' problems is matched by uncapped financial rewards and the chance to take your career as high up the chain as you want to!
